Fire rages through refugee camp in India, 21 dead



Gauhati, India: officials, a fire raged through a refugee camp in northern India, killing 21 people and wounding about 100.

Superintendent of Police said Darlong winds whipped the fire in a massive fire swept through the camp Nifingpara in the State of Tripura on Saturday for three hours before firefighters brought it under control.

Tripura CPM governing party said 21 people were killed and about 100 were hospitalized.

Most of the thatched huts were destroyed in the outpost, about 100 miles (170 kilometers) north of the capital of Tripura, Agartala.

The camp housed about 5,000 families in the Bru ethnic group, who in 1997 fled alleged persecution in Mizoram neighboring state.
