Thousands Protest in Malaysia's Capital Kuala Lumpur
Thousands of demonstrators descended on the capital of Malaysia - despite the closure of major roads - to attend a banned rally demanding electoral reforms.
Police in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday fired bullets and used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd. Toxins in chemically laced water cannons used in hanging in the mist, making an uncomfortable environment for the demonstrators.
Police said more than 500 people were arrested.
The leaders of Bersih, a coalition of over 60 non-governmental groups say they will go ahead with the rally, even if the government refused to issue the necessary permit.
Meanwhile, the pro-government supporters make their own demonstration in the capital, without police intervention.
Bersih is demanding the government implement electoral reforms before the next national elections, including measures to prevent vote buying and fraud. Elections are scheduled to be held in 2013.
