Officer killed in shooting on nuclear submarine


LONDON: A Royal Navy officer was killed and another seriously injured in a shooting on a British submarine with nuclear propulsion, police said, which was only stopped when a politician visits the gunman approached.
Another member of the Navy has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the incident on Friday in the southern port of Southampton, officials said, stressing that the shooting was not "linked to terrorism."
The attack on board a submarine more advanced and recent Navy HMS Astute, ended when the local council head disarmed the shooter and he knocked down.
The politician, Royston Smith, was on a tour of the submarine at the time, was in Southampton on a five-day visit would be after spending seven weeks at sea
Describing his decision to fight against the shooter, Smith said: "He had a magazine with 30 rounds in it, so I took the view that someone had to stop.
"At one point I decided the best form of defense was trying to disarm him. I guess I'm lucky he did not hit."

Smith, a former member of the Royal Air Force (RAF), prompted the gunman to the ground and enjoyed the weapon from his hand.

The Mayor of Southampton was also part of the tour. A spokesman for Southampton City Council said the officials were "safe."
Armed police, firefighters, paramedics and the local air ambulance were quickly deployed to the docks where the incident began and two policemen were patrolling near the launching submarine, witnesses said. (AFP)
