Gbagbo arrested in Abidjan: French ambassador

ABIDJAN: Troops loyal to Ivory Coast Alassane Ouattara won its beleaguered rival, Laurent Gbagbo in Abidjan on Monday, France's Ambassador Jean-Marc Simon told AFP.

"Laurent Gbagbo was arrested by the Republican forces in Ivory Coast, and taken to the Hotel du Golf, he said, referring to the internationally recognized president's camp fortified base in the city.

Earlier, witnesses had reported seeing the forces pro-Ouattara Gbagbo enter residential compound under siege, while the French and the UN deployed armored vehicles on a road leading to the complex. (AFP)
