Raid on Osama: blow by blow account


The latest accounts of the American raid on the compound of Osama bin Laden reveal the shooting was faster, but one man was ever shot at the American commandos and the leader of al-Qaeda had an AK-47 in his room when he was killed. According to U.S. officials and the media, here is how the transaction took place:

- Under cover of night, several helicopters to ferry 79 commandos composed of Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad, north of Islamabad, flying at low altitude to avoid radar detection, Pakistan was not informed of the raid in advance.

- Two helicopters to deliver more than 20 U.S. Navy SEALs at the residence, which was 12-18 feet (four to six meters) away from walls covered with barbed wire. One helicopter, an MH-60 Blackhawk modified apparently to evade radar, is out of service due to "mechanical failure", according to initial reports by U.S. officials.

- A commando group moves to a smaller house guest beside the main building of the compound. e-confidence bin Laden opened fire and killed with his wife.

Mail is the only man in the enclosure that draws on Americans, contrary to previous accounts of the White House who described a firefight during the entire operation of nearly 40 minutes.

- Another team of special forces of the United States enters the main house of three storeys. They meet the brother of the post, which has one hand behind his back, causing the SEALs to suspect he may have a gun, which turns out not to be the case, according to NBC News. He was shot down.

- The commandos climb the stairs and meet up with her adult son of bin Laden, Khalid, who was killed when he threw himself on the Americans, according to The New York Times.

- On the top floor, they find bin Laden and his wife in the bedroom. She would try to move between her husband and the commandos, and was wounded in the leg. Bin Laden, who gives no signal of surrender, was shot in the head, and some media say he is also struck in the chest.

Earlier versions of the raid said bin Laden "resisted" and that he used his wife as a human shield, but the White House later acknowledged, this information is incorrect.

- U.S. President Barack Obama, following the events of the White House has told the SEALs have tentatively identified bin Laden. A Time magazine report, based on an interview with CIA director, Leon Panetta, suggested bin Laden was killed at least 25 minutes in the raid.

- In the room of Ben Laden, the U.S. team found an assault rifle AK-47 and a 9 mm pistol from Russia. Other weapons are discovered in the compound.

- Special forces find phone numbers and cash planted in clothing bin Laden, suggesting that they were prepared for a rapid evacuation.

- In a coup of intelligence, Navy SEALs carried away with five computers, 10 hard drives and more than 100 storage devices, which will be covered for possible leads on plots, financing and location of members of Al-Qaeda.

- The U.S. team destroyed the helicopter crashed after the displacement of women and children in the compound of a security zone.

- Approximately 38 minutes after the start of the raid, U.S. helicopters fly away, carrying the body of the man in the United States has hunted for years.

- At 0335 GMT on Monday, Obama announced on TV that Bin Laden was killed.

- The body of bin Laden is taken to the USS Carl Vinson, an aircraft carrier off the coast of Pakistan. Around 0600 GMT, after Islamic religious rites are administered, the body of Ben Laden is facilitated in the Arabian Sea.
