Top tennis seeds Nadal, Wozniacki advance

MIAMI: Top seed Rafael Nadal and Caroline Wozniacki of expectations both from a simplicity to $ 9 million WTA and ATP Masters Miami tournament.
Nadal, on the quest for his first trophy since October in Tokyo, Japan defeated Kei Nishikori 6-4, 6-4, while Wozniacki beat Daniela Hantuchova 6-1, 7-6 (07/09).
World number one Rafael Nadal has not won a title in Miami, finishing second in 2005 to Roger Federer and three years later to Nikolay Davydenko. His victory followed a Nishikori at Wimbledon last year.
"It was one of those laps you do not want to see," said the Spaniard. "I am very pleased with the way I played today - I was at a high level tonight.
"The feeling was better than last week, so it's important. The service worked very well at the end of the match."
World number one Federer notched another three game and win another stage career through a straight sets victory over Radek Stepanek.
The third-seeded Swiss defeated the Czech 6-3, 6-3 to reach the third round.
Seventh seed Tomas Berdych fought past Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo Spain 6-1, 6-7 (07/04), 6-0.
But there was no joy for Andy Roddick, who became the second title-holder in Miami many years to break into a home opener.
The American Seed eighth session, which was troubled by a disease of poor quality for a month, was ambushed by Pablo Cuevas 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
"I had a little trouble breathing out there today," said Roddick, who will rise from 10 early the following classification.
"I had something for a little while, but I'll have it checked when I get home.
"I was not feeling well all day. I did Memphis dating on and off. It's a bit too long, I think. "
Roddick, who played Davis Cup earlier this month in Chile, then failed to make the quarterfinals at Indian Wells Masters 1000 event.
He was treated on the field Saturday for both his illness and a groin problem.
Cuevas, ranked 67th in the world, had never played before and Roddick used his first chance.
In the third round, he will face the French Gilles Simon, who beat German Rainer Schuettler 6-4, 6-3.
Federer, whose 16 Grand Slam titles are most in history, joined Pete Sampras in the seventh victory of all time list with 762 career victories. Jimmy Connors sets the pace with this statistic in 1242.
"It's nice to tie Pete, but he could have played for many years," Federer said. "He could still win matches on tour now, if he wanted."
"It's an odd stat, but it shows how long I've been around already, how I played all over the world and all the different surfaces. I played 10, 12 solid seasons, you know, "added Federer, who next faces Argentine Juan Monaco - a 6-4, 6-7 (07/02), 6-4 winner over Ukraine Sergiy Stakhovsky.
Germany Philipp Petzschner upset 10th-seeded Austrian Jurgen Melzer 6-3, 6-4.
