Portrait of Mughal Emperor Jahangir up for auction


LONDON: A British auctioneer foreground has established a unique 17th century life-size portrait of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir for sale for an estimated price of 1,000,000 to 1 and a half million pounds.
This most famous Mughal painting is offered at Bonhams and go under the hammer on April 5.
The unique work painted during the life of the Emperor is in the style of a portrait of European early 17th century.
The portrait of the emperor Jahangir, who ruled India 1605-1627 is attributed to the Mughal artist Abul Hasan, Nadir al-Zaman and "Wonder of age. He is the top member of Bonhams Indian and Islamic sale, according to a spokesman for the company.
The image is essentially a tour de force in which the emperor claims a worldwide ambition. This is achieved by its size, the magnificence, the use of precious objects in it s creation, and the words that accompany it, make its ambition to conquer all united.
There is a circular pendant around the neck of the emperor together with mica, with vessels of jade and glass at his side and the carpet beneath his feet. The border is 26 cartridges registration nasta'liq fine. The size of the image including the border calligraphic 210 x 141 cm. The image within the borders calligraphic 197 x 128.5 cm.
Alice Bailey, head of Indian and Islamic Art at Bonhams said: "This is one of the rarest paintings and more desirable 17thcentury ever come to auction. There is no other work its kind known and its importance can not be underestimated. The extraordinary detail and complexity of painting both fascinate and captivate the viewer.
