Pakistan, Windies quarter-final tomorrow
DHAKA: More is at stake for Pakistan that identify a World Cup semi-final when they take on West Indies in the first quarter-final on Wednesday in Dhaka.
In 1992, champions grabbed the wheels of the juggernaut of Australia by giving them their first defeat after 34 matches of the World Cup to complete a morale victory for Sri Lanka.
The two victories and three other top flight against Zimbabwe, Canada and Kenya catapulted to the top of the table in group A, presenting them with the opportunity to play against the group B backward West Indies. Bowling has been the strength of Pakistan in the tournament, with the master list Afridi leader over the wicket-takers and speedster Umar Gul on the sixth.
The duo has shared 30 wickets between them and will be a handful of West Indian drummer. "
Failures opens and indifferent form Afridi with the bat will be the problems of Pakistan need to resolve to continue their momentum.
"We have a problem with our open, without a doubt. Hopefully in the quarterfinals, they will do well. We need to open it to get more points and the team to perform better," coach Waqar Younis said .
The team tried Mohammad Hafeez, Kamran Akmal and Shehzad Ahmed at the top of the order, but works have not been able to come.
commissioning of Pakistan seems to have improved with the players who throw themselves in the field while pulling brilliant saves and make drop zones against Australia.
"Despite all the problems Pakistan is blessed with talent. It is because of this talent that we are a dangerous team and can win against anyone. We hope to continue this momentum," said Afridi after the victory against Australia.
The only problem for Pakistan in the tournament against New Zealand came when the bowling has failed to limit their opponents and the batter gave way under the pressure of pursuing a goal of 300.
In 1992 champions lost the match by 110 runs in a totally one-sided affair.
It is this inconsistency that will provide some of the West Indies, who have not won against a team top flight in 20 months, the opportunity to cash.
The Caribbean team barely managed to scrape through to the quarter-finals with victories against the second-level Bangladesh, Ireland and the Netherlands when they lost all three games against the best teams.
Against England and India in their last two matches, the batsmen threw their wickets with victory in the immediate vicinity and it meant they qualified last in their group with the lowest score among all the quarter finalists .
"We lost eight wickets for runs on 30-odd then that's a concern, but we are in the knockout phase right now so we really to reinforce and strengthen very quickly," said Capt. Darren Sammy.
"We come to face in Pakistan, and we must bring our A game."
Kemar Roach paceman and opener Chris Gayle, who were rested against India will be back in the team while Ravi Rampaul five wicket haul on Sunday will provide a welcome selection problem.
