Angelina Jolie



KABUL: U.S. movie star Angelina Jolie made a surprise two-day visit to Afghanistan to meet with refugees in war-torn country for Refugees United Nations said on Wednesday.

Jolie, star of such films as "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" as well as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR, during the two days meeting of the refugees, after calling for more to be done to reintegrate ex-convicts in Afghan society.

More than 5.5 million people have returned to Afghanistan since 2002, a year after the Taliban were ousted US-led invasion, according to UNHCR.

Most of them fled to Pakistan and Iran, and their return to the country's population increased by more than 20 percent, she said.

There are currently about 140,000 international troops in Afghanistan fighting the Taliban led insurgency.

"The focus should be put on the reintegration and that means not just putting on housing, but make sure there is water, jobs, school children and medical facilities," Jolie said in a statement by UNHCR at the end of the visit.

Jolie, partner, actor Brad Pitt, known for his humanitarian work. This was her second visit to Afghanistan, where she arrived on Monday. - (AFP
