Rodney King should be treated as any accused drunk driver would
Rodney King in trouble again. This time he was arrested in Moreno Valley on suspicion of driving under the influence and released on bail Wednesday morning. As extensive criminal record - not to mention his concert on "Celebrity Rehab" VH1 - proves king struggling with addiction.
Although I personally believe punitive measures, such as tactics used in Glynn County, Georgia, is the best way to guide a person in trouble to get healthy, I do not think people who break the law must be in a position of the boat. Some would say that the king - who has received $ 3.8 million in civil litigation and has become a household name after LAPD officers brutally beat - had this advantage since 1991. Others argue that the opposite is true.
Columnist Patt Morrison sailed this issue in "The echo of eternal destiny."
Some people believe strongly that the 1991 videotaped beating a hanging flashing buzzer, flashing neon "Kick Me" sign on the back of Rodney King for the rest of his life.
And there are those who are certain that Rodney King handed an appointment out of jail free card with no expiration date.
Those of the first school will point to a pile of small potatoes for meetings with the law since 1991 - illegally tinted windows, pick up a transvestite prostitute in his car and for vice cops domestic violence, violation of seat belt the costs of drinking and driving here and there.
Police harassment, they will say. He put it to the cops, and now the cops are there to make it. And after what he has been through, that is not completely panicked at the sight of a cop?
Those of the second school will respond, yes, but:
How many guys get a deputy chief called to the scene of a complaint of domestic violence usually ... just because it's Rodney King? How many drivers with an expired registration and no license on him to get away without a ticket? How many times have you woken Daryl Gates to 3 hours on a "red one" alert for a man caught with a transvestite prostitute? How many guys get released without being booked, and never subsequently charged after trying to run the undercover cop that the deputy caught him?
And how many traffic stops can rattle a designated spokesperson cogeneration remaining silent about a speeding ticket usually until head of the agency public information is presented to the next conversation , as happened Sunday in San Diego County?
