Google gets into April Fools with Gmail Motion
WASHINGTON: Google joined the April Fool's pranks on Friday with the release of a new product called "Gmail Motion" that supposedly allows users to send and receive emails using gestures only.
Gmail product manager Paul McDonald, an explanatory video impassive, said Motion Gmail uses a "language of movement that completely replaces type" and ends the use of "outdated technology" as the keyboard and mouse.
"Using the camera to your computer and a tracking algorithm space, Gmail Motion interprets the physical movement and it turns into action commands," said McDonald. "The movements are designed to be intuitive, ergonomic and easy to do."
In the video, a "Googler" shows how Gmail Motion, pointing backward with his thumb, for example, to respond to an e-mail and using two thumbs to "reply all."
The video also includes an interview with a "Klayman Lorraine", described as a "specialist environmental movement Nevada Polytechnic College."
"Motion Gmail free regular users of the constraints of modern society and our interface with our machines have on the human body," she said.
A link on the homepage of Google directs a user to a post explaining Gmail Motion, which promises to "transform your e-mail in a real body of work."
Google is famous for its April Fool's jokes, which over the years have included job applications for positions on the Moon and the revelation that his Internet search rankings are compiled by pigeons. - (AFP)
