Protest demos against Davis' release
KARACHI: Partial strike being observed in the country on Friday on the appeal of various political and religious groups to protest against alleged government complicity in the release of CIA operative Raymond Davis.
Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI), Sunni Ittehad Council, Jamaat Islami, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam factions and various student organizations had announced to hold protest rallies and sit-in against the release of Davis medium security alert across the country.
Several protest rallies and demonstrations reported in various cities after Friday prayers.
A protest demonstration was held at Jamia Binnori city of Karachi. The companies were partially closed in the city, while road transport has been less than normal.
Lahore security has been reinforced around the U.S. Consulate. Several political parties organized a protest rally in Lahore, Masjid-e-Shuhada at Governor House. Traders closed their shops and other businesses.
Tehrik-e-Insaf held a protest rally in Islamabad's Lal Masjid in Aabpara.
Authorities said security alert level for a week.
U.S. Embassy in Islamabad said in a notice of cessation of the embassy and consulate offices in Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar today. U.S. nationals in Pakistan were also advised to ensure their safety.
