Fearless Bangladesh down England
Chittagong: the ninth wicket pair of Bangladesh Mohammad Mahmudullah and Shafiul Islam scored 58 runs to send England crashing to defeat two wickets in the World Cup on Friday.
Tigers were down for the count when they fell to 169-8 in the 40 th of chasing a modest target 226 in a day or night game Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong.
But Mahmuddullah (21 not out) and Shafiul (24 not out) pleaded unlikely victory before 18,000 screaming home fans to revive the campaign of Bangladesh in the tournament they are co-hosting with India and Sri Lanka.
Bangladesh, who have four points from as many games, should continue to beat the Netherlands and the powerful South Africa in their remaining matches to secure a place in the quarterfinals from Group B.
Britain remained on five points from five matches, a point of the West Indies, who played a game less.
Opener Imrul Kayes top-scored with 60, adding 82 runs for the fourth wicket with skipper Shakib Al Hasan (32), rent a house party to 155-3 in the 31-m above.
England hit back to take five wickets for 14 runs before Mahmuddullah and Shafiul pitched pace and spin, so as to seal a dramatic victory over the one to save.
England paid dearly for bowling 23 wides as late in the evening dew made it difficult for bowlers to grip the ball.
Jonathan Trott and Eoin Morgan were the only batsmen to England to challenge the Bangladesh spinners, scoring a half century before their team was dismissed for 225 in the final over.
Trott hit 67 and left-hander Morgan, who arrived in Chittagong on Tuesday to replace the injured Kevin Pietersen, made an immediate impact with a free 63 from 72 balls.
Duo put on 109 for the fourth wicket after England, sent in to bat by Shakib on sluggish pitch, fell to 53-3 in 17 more.
The partnership was interrupted by a brilliant catch Kayes, who dived into the department on a deep square leg to hold the ball after Morgan skiing sweep against on-break bowler Naeem Islam.
Morgan's dismissal triggered a collapse in which England lost their last seven wickets for 63 runs after being well placed in a 162-3 in the 39 th over.
Naeem finished with 2-29 from eight overs and left arm spinners Abdur Razzak and Shakib also claimed two wickets each.
Matt Prior, England, a new knife instead of Pietersen, made 15 when he was dismissed in bizarre fashion, to a standstill colleague Mushfiqur Rahim of Bangladesh with the first deliveries of Razzaq's.
Rahim removed bails from a wide ball to leg side, but even before it pulled back foot in just in time, he again wandered from its increase.
Seeing the batsman out of his ground, quick-thinking Raheem pulled out a stump for a solution that was assigned to judge the TV, went in their favor.
Bangladesh next play the Netherlands in Chittagong on Monday, while England clash with the West Indies in Chennai in the next Thursday.
