New 2014 BMW 3-series GT review, test drive

For starters, it is not what is expected . 3-series GT is called but it looks very little like a regular 3 most angles . Fewer still in the flesh . The handsome nose is fuller and more exaggerated roofline that rises above the rear is a large bulbous bow lengthened and the rear of the car is completely different. Not strictly appealing from most angles , but neither is it unattractive . What BMW has done well is disguise how great this car is within .

There is more space in front, much more legroom in the back and , last but not least , has a huge boot over 500 liters. To give this extra space , BMW has had to lengthen the wheelbase of the normal three . The GT is considerably longer than the standard car , and heavier too. It also has a rear lift gate or in the back , like a Skoda Superb , which makes getting luggage in and out very easy. BMW has raised the ground clearance of the GT for added practicality.

So it is much more comfortable on the inside? First impressions , especially the front seats are a bit confusing . You are sitting upright and vertical space has also been used to provide more legroom , but because the script is similar to March 1 - regular series, does not feel so different. However, in the back , where it matters , there is much more of a difference . Lots of extra leg space , the more upright seat has a better thigh support and can also recline the seatback . What is also interesting is that the entry and exit is easier, due to the higher seat position . The large central tunnel makes it difficult for the central passenger to get comfortable.

Of course , nothing good comes without a cost , so this car really does not drive like a 3 series . In isolation and in comparison to the competition , it will remain very competitive , but just do not run as sweetly as a Series 3 . And that BMW feel connected ' you get behind the wheel of a regular 3 is missing . Still, the steering is very precise and there is no doubt or hesitation when the car is asked to become a corner . Also impressive are the brakes. Pedal feel is good , there are plenty of bite and it gives you confidence. It's just that the rear of the car does not feel as locked and so sure. The extra weight , greater ground clearance and long wheelbase steal extra agility. Clearly, the setup is more for a relaxed and straight-line driving stability .

As a result , the suspension surprisingly comfortable feel . There is a degree of flexibility that is very welcome and the cabin remains fairly isolated from the road too. Only large potholes and craters very bad recorded as a thud.

BMW 320d GT first bring to India and will be followed by the 328i . We drove the latter and we are happy to give BMW largest gasoline four hearted felt as tasty and as shocking as ever. The additional torque of the turbocharged direct injection helped handle the extra weight of the GT quite easily and never felt the 328i lacks grunt. It does not feel as fast as a regular 328i for sure, but the proportion in the superlative cleverly chosen gearbox eight-speed helps to power in the mid range and high end so easily , which rarely have a less large capacity straight-six under the hood.

BMW 3 GT is very well suited to the Indian market , especially if you will be sitting in the back. It has more space , it is easier to enter and exit , and looks and feels like a bigger car . Almost as nice to drive as a regular 3 has adequate performance , good handling and even rides well. All 3 Series buyers will have to do now is decide whether they want sports or a little more expensive and spacious, it's as simple as that.
