Gangster Chhota Rajan got journo J Dey killed: Mumbai police


Mumbai police said Monday they had arrested seven people for the murder of a journalist of the crime and revealed that the coup was supposed to have been ordered by Chhota Rajan underworld Don. Mafia Don Chhota Rajan had ordered the hit on Jyotirmoy Dey, but the gang had no knowledge of the target until a fterwards, Himanshu Roy, head of the Crime Branch of Mumbai police, alleged in a news conference.


Dey, editor of the newspaper investigations of mid-day, was killed in a shootout in a northern suburb of Mumbai on June 11.

Roy said the gang had followed the journalist on three motorcycles and a Qualis, before shooting him five times from behind.

The officer said the gang was paid 500,000 rupees ($ 11,000) for the murder of the contract and fled to a series of temple towns across the country in the immediate aftermath, where most of were arrested.

The murder weapon, a US-made .32 revolver and 20 rounds of the Czech Republic and ammunition were recovered, he added.

Bombay police commissioner Arup Patnaik said: "We do not know why he was killed, we have no answers for the moment .."

One of the men arrested is known to work for Rajan, once the right man for Dawood Ibrahim, the Mumbai crime boss suspected of being behind the deadly bombings in Mumbai in 1993 that killed more than 250.

Dey, who was 56, has written extensively on the activities of gangs in Mumbai. Its editor said at the time that the journalist was "a victim of its journalism without fear."

Her murder provoked outrage among journalists, including hundreds took to the streets of Mumbai to demand greater protection from the state government and for an early conclusion of the case.

All seven suspects are in police custody till July 4.


The police, however, did not comment on what was the motive behind Dey murder.
