Poonam Pandey plan template to the band if India beat Sri Lanka on Saturday has angered the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) women's wing, which has sought police action against him. In a letter to Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik, BJP Mahila Morcha state president of Nita Kelkar said Saturday's World Cup game at Wankhede Stadium to be honored by President Pratibha Patil and the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse.
"To undress before a large gathering to celebrate the victory of India is highly condemnable and should be immediately stopped and defeated," he urged Kelkar.
"Indian women are revered and respected since time immemorial. We have a tradition of Sita, Draupadi, Jijamata, Queen of Jhansi, Tarabai Holkar, Savitri Phule, Ramabai Ambedkar, Sarojini Naidu, Indira Gandhi, Kalpana Chawla and many more.
Eminent lawyer Ganesh Sovani, explaining the legal situation, said that if Poonam actually puts his clothes in front of the crowd, it would be a grave breach under article 292, 294 of Indian Penal Code and the indecent representation of Women Act 1987, in addition to presenting a safety hazard for the enormous crowd on the site.
Poonam, who was seen in several ad campaigns, said Friday she would ask permission from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Mumbai police before his "bare all" act.
"I'm not going to distract members of the Indian team. This is a legal document and it is my idea of celebrating the victory of India in the World Cup, "she said.
Kelkar responded by saying there are many other ways to celebrate the victory of India without sullying the image of Indian women to the world.
