Davis trial recommence in jail



LAHORE: The trial resumed on Thursday the court CIA contractor Raymond Davis in Kote Lakhpat prison here.

Davis, 36, shot and killed two men in Lahore on January 27. He said that he acted in self-defense and the United States says that he has diplomatic immunity and should be repatriated.

Court resumes the day after Pakistani Taliban killed a government minister, Shahbaz Bhatti, who was also the only Christian in the cabinet, for criticizing the law, which requires the death penalty for insulting Islam.

United States retaining retired judge, Zahid Hussain Bukhari, who is also a former prosecutor of the government to help with the case of Davis, Bokhari said.

Security was tight in Côte Lakhpat jail, where tests are conducted for security reasons. Machine guns were mounted on top of water towers inside the prison and concrete barriers were placed on the road leading to it.

Davis, former special forces officer, was charged with double murder and faces possible execution.
