‘Transformers’ Gets Into High Gear, Owns July 4 Weekend Box Office
It’s a red, white and huge holiday for Transformers: Dark of the Moon, which is on pace to earn $120 million for the four-day July 4 weekend, easily scoring the #1 spot at the box office.
Shia LaBeouf’s and his robot car buddies smashed the animated autos of Cars 2, which falls to #2 with an extended weekend estimate of $28 million.
The Cameron Diaz-Justin Timberlake comedy Bad Teacher is in a tight battle with Larry Crowne, starring Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, for third place. Both films are tracking toward roughly $17 million.
Monte Carlo, starring Selena Gomez and Leighton Meester, is projected to rack up $10 million, just ahead of superhero flick Green Lantern’s $9 million.
After that, the chart rounds out with several movies that have been in theaters for a while.
Sci-fi adventure Super 8 ($6.5 million) is expected to finish #7, followed by Mr. Popper’s Penguins ($5.5 million), Bridesmaids ($4 million) and Midnight in Paris ($4 million).
