Juneteenth needs to live on and be passed through the generations
Other June 19th pedaled around on the calendar. This happens Sunday, June 19 this year is special, not only because it commemorates the Independence Day of the black people, but it is an opportunity to reflect on the context of the Abrahamic Juneteenth historical perspective and how Tradition favors the unification of all peoples.
One of the influences in my life, Uncle JC, early instilled the spirit of Juneteenth in me. Juneteenth, an acronym for June 19, commemorates each year the release of former slaves in Texas as mandated June 19, 1865. It all started January 1, 1863, the enactment of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Lincoln.
The backdrop for Juneteenth originated in Galveston, Texas, where my roots. My mother was born and raised in Galveston, and Uncle JC was the shaman and storyteller of our clan. My two brothers, two sisters and I have repeatedly said the Juneteenth story: At the end of the Civil War, General Gordon Granger Army June 19, 1865, in the city of Galveston said the institution abolition of slavery in Texas - the first manifestations of joy by free blacks now known as Juneteenth.
JC uncle, an old sleeping car porter, had its own version and reasons about Juneteenth. And his motives may have been influenced by everything he sipped his coffee. In any case, he said, "You guys are afraid of man Do not you understand You is not supposed to work on the eleventh Down Home we would be closed throughout the South down;.? And you couldn 't even catch a bus on the ninth. "We were not stupid enough to believe everything Uncle JC claimed, we knew he was exaggerating. But he had a point.
Juneteenth is a success who should live and be passed down through generations. Martin Luther King had a saying I think that describes its scope. While addressing an audience after the law was passed prohibiting segregation in bus Mobile, Alabama, King said: "We will not let this thing be that small. No! This thing is not just a success for blacks only, but milestone for all of humanity. "
