NATO, EU to discuss Libya options
BRUSSELS: NATO and EU ministers are to meet to lay out options for addressing Muammar Gaddafi in Libya, as leaders ponder the military and economic capabilities to solve the crisis in the oil-rich Libya.
meeting will be attended by defense ministers, foreign ministers and prime ministers or presidents to hold talks on Thursday and Friday, which will determine the prospects of military intervention through the no-fly zone, humanitarian assistance and economic props.
"Politics is it a go as soon as possible," said a senior EU diplomat, Colonel Muammar Qaddafi, a one-time pariah whose rehabilitation England, France, Italy and others are currently the subject of global hand-wringing.
"Nobody expected Gaddafi will melt over the next few days, but we are developing a range of responses," added the source, who requested anonymity.
The stakes are high, with oil prices and the prospect of flight flow of migrants crossing from north Africa to the top of Europe in the minds of many.
EU 27 Ministers of Foreign Affairs to start a conversation in mid-morning, when they arrive for talks preparation of a full summit of leaders of the next day.
Britain and France lobbied the UN Security Council authorized the no-fly zone. But like Washington wants any military action conducted under the banner of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the Arab regional support saw it as significant. (AFP)
