Heavy machinegun fire rocks Libyan capital Tripoli
Tripoli: A heavy machine-gun burst in the Libyan capital Tripoli on Sunday, the first such outbreak in the main stronghold of Muammar Gaddafi's two-week old uprising against his 41-year reign.
A government spokesman Ibrahim Moussa denies any military action carried out in Tripoli, saying that the shooting was staged at the festival of the army to seize several towns with the rebel forces.
It was unclear who made the survey, which began shortly before dawn, or what was its cause. volleys of machine gun, some of them heavy caliber, was reflected around the center of Tripoli, along with ambulance sirens, chanting pro-Gaddafi, and the cacophony of car horns as a means of accelerated due to its proximity.
"These celebrations, as government troops took control of all areas in Benghazi and in control of Benghazi," said Ibrahim, referring to the rebel-controlled second largest city in Libya, located in the Far East.
State television reported that government troops repeated the important coastal towns and Zawiyah Misrata, immediately to the west and east of Tripoli, and were heading for Benghazi, where the opposition Libyan National Council established a crisis committee, in search of foreign recognition.
The report of the state television gave no details, and with poor communications, affecting all areas outside Tripoli, there was no immediate way to confirm the battle turn. Rebel representatives could not be reached for comment.
"I assure you ... there is no fighting going on in Tripoli. Everything is safe. Tripoli is 100 percent under control. What you hear is the fireworks. People in the streets, dancing in the area," Ibrahim said, adding however: " I would advise not to go there for your safety. "
Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Qaim, told reporters late Saturday that Zawiyah was "quiet." We hope that tomorrow morning, life returns to normal. "
Libya's rebellion was inspired by the whole peaceful uprisings that toppled autocrats in neighboring Egypt and Tunisia, and which spread to other Arab countries with strong leaders and a lack of democracy, good governance and jobs.
