British Prime Minister, David Cameron, on Friday called for thorough investigations of the scandal in the New World phone hacking and how it happened, as his former communications director was arrested in connection with it.
The scandal is to be a growing political liability for Cameron, who has hired Andy Coulson after his resignation as editor of the New World over the allegations.
Cameron went on the defensive at a Downing Street news conference Friday, saying: ". The decision to hire him was mine, and I alone "
He said he was given a second chance Coulson, after being assured that he was not involved in wrongdoing to the newspaper.
Coulson resigned from the New World on the allegations of previous phone hacking, but denied knowledge of the alleged activities.
The Metropolitan Police said a man the same age as Coulson, 43, was arrested at a police station in south London over claims of hacking telephone and corruption. They refused to name the suspect, but when asked about Coulson, led to a declaration of CNN news on the arrest.
Speaking shortly before the announcement of the police, Cameron urged a broader reform of the press.
He told the News of the global crisis "is not only journalists on a newspaper, it's not even just only press - it is also the police and about how politics works and politicians too. "
It was a new beginning, he says, after decades in which politicians of both Labour and Conservative parties and the press has grown too close.
"This is a wake-up call," he said. "It is on my watch as the music stopped and I say loud and clear that the relationship has to change in the future."
