BEIJING: China appears to have staged a second test flight of a new stealth fighter, a state newspaper said on Tuesday, which if true would be another step towards reducing the gap with military the United States.
Photographs of the J-20 Stealth Fighter jet prototype circulating on online forums military, the Global Times said, but did not confirm the flight, nor the authenticity of photographs.
The photos could not be verified by Reuters.
The popular tabloid, owned by the spokesman of the Communist Party's People's Daily, showed a photograph of a gray fighter and a legend that says "alleged J-20 prototype takes off" from an airfield in Chengdu in Sichuan province in southwestern Sunday.
The aircraft made several passes and moved its wings to greet the crowd near the airfield, "the Global Times, citing an anonymous person as saying.
China's Ministry of Defense did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Reports of China's first test flight of the J-20 in early January was widely circulated on blogs and websites of Chinese online news, including the Global Times before the government confirmed for the flight a visit by Defense Secretary Robert Gates.
